Protecting & Creating New Habitats
No other company is like Nakheel. In 2007 we set an ambitious sustainability agenda to help implement better practice across our organisation. This led to sustainability initiatives in all areas – in planning our developments, asset management, brand strategy and elsewhere too.
No other company has its own in-house environment team; no other company has worked closely with world renowned global partners to monitor water quality; and no other company can say it has attracted new marine life as a direct result of our work.
We have begun making our own people aware of global issues and how individual issues can be take positive action. For instance, we have introduced a company scheme for recycling paper and plastic bottles.
You may have thought that a massive building project that claims land from the sea would frighten off marine life and destroy the fragile eco-system. Yet at The Palm Jumeirah, the very opposite is true.
What better way to transform a disused quarry than turning it into a bird sanctuary. That's exactly what Nakheel have done at Al Warsan lake, providing a habitat for at least 186 species of birds.
Growing a city out of the ocean creates both problems and opportunities for good environmental practice. The smart thinking has to begin before the first grain of sand is laid.
From smarter irrigation to clever cooling systems, from transport systems to protecting eco-systems, Nakheel is driving forward our thinking about sustainability.
