7th November 2017

Thousands of residents, staff and members of the public sign up for developer’s 30x30 events

Master developer Nakheel clocked up more than 130 hours of physical activity through 135 sports events in the first two weeks of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, with thousands of residents, staff and members of the public joining the company’s efforts to help make Dubai the most active city in the world.

With the Fitness Challenge now in its third week, Nakheel has already hosted a plethora of land and water events – from cycling to swimming, community walks to kayaking, 10k runs to tennis, and badminton to basketball – to encourage residents, employees, customers and the Dubai community to get fit.

Nakheel is backing the initiative by urging its 270,000 community residents and 1,300 employees to take 30 minutes of daily exercise throughout the 30-day event, which aims to encourage long-term lifestyle changes with sports and fitness becoming part of everybody’s daily routine.

So far, Nakheel’s residents and staff have cycled nearly 250 kilometres, walked 86 km, run 12 km and kayaked five km, among a host of other activities. They have spent more than 60 hours at bootcamp, training or aerobics sessions, 16 hours walking, eight hours on their bikes and nearly 50 hours on other sports.

Ali Rashid Lootah, Chairman of Nakheel, said: “The Dubai Fitness Challenge is taking the city by storm, and we are proud to be playing such a key role in its success. I am overwhelmed by the reaction from residents, staff and the public, who have come together to celebrate and take part in this wonderful initiative.

“What’s more, our participation is not only promoting health and fitness; it is encouraging more social interaction at our communities and fostering a greater sense of teamwork among our staff, too. It is also unearthing some serious sporting talent among our employees.

“With sport and fitness, there are no boundaries. Everybody can take part, no matter their age, job title, background or ability. With week three of the Dubai Fitness Challenge underway, we are warming up for another exciting line-up of free events at our communities and retail developments. Everybody is welcome to join us as we continue our support for this unique and very special initiative.”

Nakheel’s public events so far have included community walks around Al Ittihad Park on Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah Islands, and pop-up outdoor fitness and activity centres at Jumeirah Village, Jumeirah Islands, The Gardens and Ibn Battuta Mall. At Golden Mile Galleria, the company hosted a public work-out with world-leading fitness celebrity Kayla Itsines and a wide variety of classes.

Staff activities – all taking place before or after working hours or at weekends – have included walking, running, swimming, cycling, basketball, tennis, football, cricket, bootcamps, an aquathon, horse-riding and yoga.

This week’s line-up features a community walk at Jebel Ali Village, pop-up fitness centres at Jumeirah Village Triangle and Ibn Battuta Mall, daily walk at Al Ittihad Park and the Ripe Market and more fitness classes at Golden Mile. There’s also a packed schedule of out-of-hours events for employees.

Ali Rashid Lootah continued: “Health, wellbeing and fitness are integral to Nakheel’s strategy and psyche. Our communities have parks, jogging tracks, sports courts and fitness clubs, with a huge network of cycle tracks on the way. We sponsor the Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club and a host of international sporting events such as the Dubai Tour, and support dozens of local land and water sports events every year.

“Dubai Fitness Challenge is our golden opportunity to further highlight how we promote sport and fitness as a responsible corporate citizen, developer and employer. And as someone who personally follows a strict daily exercise routine, I am actively encouraging residents and staff to ‘think fit’ throughout this event – and beyond.”

Nakheel is offering 30 per cent discount for day guests using the gyms and pools at Jebel Ali Club, Jumeirah Islands Club, Masakin Al Furjan Club and Azure Beach Club on week days throughout the Dubai Fitness Challenge.
