Traveler follows in footsteps of legendary Ibn Battuta
Ibn Battuta Mall, the world's largest themed shopping mall, received a special visit by Carolyn McIntyre a Middle East political analyst who is attempting to recreate an epic journey made by the famed Islamic scholar and traveler, Ibn Battuta.
Ibn Battuta set off on his legendary journey nearly 700 years ago and covered almost the entirety of the then present Islamic world. The mall traces the route that had the most impact on Ibn Battuta's life through its six elaborately themed courts Tunisia, China, Egypt, India, Persia and Andalusia.
Local journalists arrived at the mall to spend time interviewing British-born Carolyn on her travel tales and experiences since her journey started in the Moroccan city of Tangiers in Summer 2006. Carolyn's travels have already taken her through a number of countries, including Algeria, Lebanon and Yemen. Once complete, Carolyn's journey will see her pass through a total of 46 countries.Ibn Battuta Mall is home to a number of historical Islamic displays and Carolyn took time to browse through them, remarking not only on the distinctive and well-laid out design of the mall, but also how historically accurate the exhibits were. She added:
«Dubai is the 21st century face of the Middle East and I am sure Ibn Battuta would have visited here if he was alive today. The exhibits at the mall are beautiful and they provide an excellent learning source, especially for children.»
Ibn Battuta Mall has experienced phenomenal success since opening its doors in 2005. Its 265 shopping outlets include fashion, accessories, sportswear, restaurants, Fitness First, Geant Hypermarket and 21 screen Grand Megaplex with IMAX. In addition to the retail amenities, the unique exhibits aim to increase awareness on 1000 years of Muslim contribution in science and technology to modern civilization and can all be seen, free of charge, in different locations throughout the mall.
